For the past decade, I have been part of an industry studying waste streams and promoting recycling efforts of SWFL businesses for Sunshine Recycling Services. My career has proudly brought me to become actively involved with organizations such as Keep Collier Beautiful. As a mother of our future generation, environmental and beautification programs that KCB promotes has become a part of my personal life as well.

My background is that of a Mom who raised two children in the countryside of Ada, Michigan. I spent many years tour guiding at Blandford Nature Center and Meijer Botanical Gardens. When my children were pre-school I would bring them along so they would learn and enjoy the trails filled with trees, scrubs, lichens, mushrooms and Michigan’s small wildlife. Their early training has been passed on to my grandchildren. My career had been in Microbiology: Medical/Environmental. I’m a Spartan and my education came from Michigan State University. Go Green!

I feel privileged to contribute to Keep Collier Beautiful. We live in a pristine area with abundant foliage and wildlife. We need to preserve the best of what nature has to offer. Trash and waste cannot be a part of the picture. The solution of recycling, and pickup education is helping to keep our “Beautiful Collier Beautiful”.

My love for the environment and Florida flora is evident in the art I create—I design and dye silk and run my company, Leigh Designs. Formerly I taught art in public school before I earned my Masters Degree in Fibers and also had a 20+ career in the computer industry doing research and marketing in the Boston area. I served as environmental chair at a local yacht club assisting KCB with Bay and Coastal cleanups from the water before I joined this important organization.

I was born and raised in Naples, Florida. After attending college in Gainesville for five years, I finished my education at Florida Gulf Coast University and moved back to Naples in 2008. I have worked for the Collier County Health Department since November 2008. As a Health Educator in the Tobacco Control Program I work with the community to identify strategies to effectively reduce tobacco use and access to tobacco products. I also coordinate the Tobacco-Free Collier Partnership to promote policy change in Collier County and decrease exposure to secondhand smoke. Another component of the Tobacco Control Program is the Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) clubs in Collier County. SWAT is a youth advocacy group that promotes leadership and community involvement. SWAT uses these avenues among teens to generate awareness about tobacco. I have volunteered at the Coastal Clean-Up since 2008 and am thrilled to continue to build a partnership

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Keep Collier Beautiful website. I am an Ohio native who attended Ohio State University after serving in the United States Army. After college I worked for Equifax for 33 years, starting as a field representative and retiring as a Regional Vice President in charge of field training. After retiring from Equifax in 1997 and moving to Naples, FLorida, I became active in the Conservancy as a Boat Captain and a trainer of boat captains. I have been a member of the Naples Cruise Club since 2006 and am Commodore for 2011. My hobbies are boating and scuba diving and donating blood on a regular basis (over 73 gallons so far).
